2012 Amaryllis Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon

2012 Amaryllis Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon

Winemaker Notes

Perched on an exposed shoulder up on Spring Mountain, this site gets plenty of sun, as it sits above the fog, basking in the warmth of the valley. The 2012 Amaryllis Cabernet Sauvignon is 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 2% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot. Built for medium term cellaring, this full-bodied wine shows a combination of firmness and textural notes. The espresso and baking spices aromas integrate well with the black cherry and blueberry flavors.

Reviews

92 points - James Suckling
Tight and tangy red showing berry, chocolate and walnut-skin undertones. Medium-to full-bodied and tight wine, yet one that's also intense and flavorful with a fruity and light cocoa aftertaste. Drink or hold.

92 points - Wine & Spirits
From a three-acre vineyard planted in 2001 and farmed with a minimum of irrigation due to the lack of water resources, this is 92 percent cabernet sauvignon, with contributions from merlot, malbec and petit verdot. The mountain site lends this wine structure and verticality, holding all the plum and strawberry flavors with freshness. It's brawny, intense and fragrant, a wine to decant for grilled butterflied leg of lamb.

90 points - Wine Enthusiast
This wine needs time to open, but when it does it reveals smooth, thick oakiness on the palate that settles into a complementary note to the spicy clove and cherry vanilla. Medium to fuller-bodied in style, it finishes softly.

16/20 points - Jancis Robinson
Generous cassis aromatics. Black current and tobacco with baking spice and cracked pepper accents on the palate. Fine while tactile tannins and balancing acidity into a long finish. Drink 2017-2025.

Harvest Notes

2012 was near perfect growing conditions, with very little heat spikes, but a consistent, warm temperature. With bright sunshine through flowering and fruit set, followed by a warm and sunny summer, the vines were loaded with healthy and abundant clusters heading into veraison. The fruit for the 2012 Bougetz Cellars Amaryllis Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from a single vineyard in the Spring Mountain District AVA. Beautiful weather through September allowed the fruit to mature evenly on the vine with harvest occurring in the first week of October.
